If you are outdoors at either of these times, you are expected to stop your activities, face in the direction of the flag, and stand at attention until the music ends. You do not need to see the flag to honor it. If you hear the music, you are within proper distance to respect it.
If you are driving on post at one of these times, stop your car, even if you are in traffic. It is proper to exit your car, and stand beside it, as well as your passengers, but for safety and for children's safety, you are not required to exit. As far as stopping in the road while on post, it is regulation that you stop the vehicle. There are posts out there that if you fail to stop to honor the colors, and an MP sees you, you can be ticketed. You may not hear the music from your car, but if you see the flag, or if you see others standing, then you can bet it is time to honor the colors.
It is important to teach your children the proper traditions as well. If you
are at home, (on or off post) and you hear the Retreat, have your children stop
playing, and show respect. Teach them to be silent during the ceremony. (Easier
said than done, I know, but it is a wonderful tradition to grow up with.)
I believe that the traditions of the Army are fading fast, and this frightens
me. Support your country, and show your spouse that you are indeed proud of what
they do, and hold dear to your heart all of the wonderful things they fight to
keep sacred to the United States. Please, do show your respect to the American
flag. So many have lost their lives defending it.
